Dr. Johnson
Veterinarian
Dr. Johnson is a California native, but made the border crossing a couple of years ago and currently resides in Verdi, Nevada, along with her husband, a rambunctious Black Lab, and an affectionate but feisty Bengal cat. Becoming a veterinarian was the fulfillment of a dream born from discussing veterinary medicine during the turn of the 20th century with an elderly cousin who came to live with her family when she was twelve.
After graduating with honors from UC Davis in both Biology and Veterinary Medicine, she has worked as a small animal general practitioner for practices in Sacramento, Davis, and Truckee, California. During the last two decades of her career, she has focused on emergency and critical care and has worked in the Bay Area, Sacramento, the Los Angeles area, and Reno. She enjoys getting to know her clients and their pets and tries to treat all of her patients like she would treat her own pets. Her interests in veterinary medicine are excellent client communication, skin and ear problems, pet nutrition, and pet behavior problems.
When she is not in the office, she loves hiking, spending time with friends and family, cooking, and playing the piano.
Dr. Alexandra Moore
Founder & Medical Director
Dr. Alexandra Moore is the founder and Medical Director of Monte Vista Animal Hospital. She is in the clinic five days a week, providing best-in-class medical, preventative, and surgical care. Known for her warm demeanor and deep dedication to her patients, Dr. Moore strives to build lasting, meaningful relationships with clients by offering the kind of personalized attention that makes every visit feel like coming home.
Growing up in Reno, Dr. Moore recalls a time when the family veterinarian was more than just a medical provider — they were a trusted figure who knew not only your pet’s birthday but yours too. Inspired by that sense of connection, she dreamed of creating a hospital that combined modern veterinary excellence with a community-first approach. Monte Vista is the realization of that lifelong vision.
A third-generation Reno native, Dr. Moore is a proud graduate of the University of Nevada, Reno, and the Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Biology with distinction, a minor in Psychology, and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM). She was a Dean’s List honoree and WICHE recipient throughout veterinary school.
After graduating in 2012, Dr. Moore quickly rose through the ranks to become Senior Associate Veterinarian at a highly respected integrative practice in Reno. Throughout her career, she has delivered community education talks, volunteered her services to shelter pets, and developed a professional passion for advanced dentistry. Her post-graduate training includes coursework from:
- University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine
- UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine – Continuing Professional Education
- Veterinary Dental Forum
- Two years of residency training from the AVDC
Dr. Moore enjoys exploring Northern Nevada’s beauty, gardening, and cooking meals for friends and family using homegrown ingredients. She shares her life with her husband, Adam, and their three wonderful children—August, Greta, and Ingrid. The family also includes Mia, Chip, and 10 very sassy chickens.

Dr. Bowen
Veterinarian
Dr. Bowen grew up in central California on an apple ranch, surrounded by dogs and cats, horses, ponies, donkeys, pigs, ducks, geese, chickens, as well as hamsters, guinea pigs, and fish. She was active in 4-H, and it was only natural that she decided to become a veterinarian. As a teenager, the family moved to Malawi, Africa, for several years, where her father took a sabbatical to teach physics.
She attended veterinary school at UC Davis, where she received a DVM, as well as a master’s degree in Physiology. She then completed an Internship in Medicine and Surgery at the Animal Medical Center in New York City and finished a Residency in Small Animal Internal Medicine at the University of Florida in Gainesville. She subsequently became Board Certified in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine.
Dr. Bowen and her husband moved to Nevada in 2019 and live in Reno. Her ancestors originally moved to the Washoe Valley in 1862 from Wales. Their diaries describe life in Carson City and Reno, as well as working in the mines and the timber and cattle industries.
Over her career, Dr. Bowen has worked in specialty, general, wildlife, and emergency medicine, and as an Internal Medicine consultant at Antech Diagnostics. She assisted with the successful effort to repopulate the West Coast with peregrine falcons and also worked with the Long Marine Lab at UC Santa Cruz, CA, treating elephant seals and sea lions. Her diverse career experiences have allowed her to have a deep understanding of the challenges of medicine and to maintain an empathetic and practical perspective in patient care.
In her spare time, Dr. Bowen enjoys spending time with her extended family. She and her husband enjoy kayaking, hiking, and exploring the world.
